Friday, August 1 to Monday, September 29, 2014 – Canada’s Titanic: The Empress of Ireland at the Maritime Museum in Victoria, BC
Remember the epic film Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet—the one where Leo shouted at the edge of the ship that he is “the king of the world”?
Apparently, Canada had its own version of Titanic. It was called the Empress of Ireland, and it sunk on May 29, 1914, taking with a tremendous loss of life. It is the story of a ship which was responsible for much of the immigration to Canada and the tragic loss of her at sea.
The event is to be recreated in an exhibit at the Maritime Museum in Victoria from August 1 to September 29, featuring many items that were salvaged from the Empress of Ireland shipwreck.
