Campbell River will be kicking off the Christmas season with a bang! Mark your calendars for this HUGE Christmas event starting with the Big Truck Parade at 5pm on Friday December 1. This is an annual tradition that features decorated cement trucks (how do they turn the drum with all those lights?!), a logging truck complete with logs, snow plows, tow trucks, tractors, fire trucks including the new pump truck (maybe Santa will be in the crane basket!), and more.
The parade will travel along Highway 19A heading to downtown, so detours will be set in place to encourage drivers to go either up Alder or Dogwood Streets instead.
There are also lots of activities happening in downtown Campbell River this evening! Kids can get free glow sticks at 5pm to the first 300 children attending at Spirit Square. In the centre of Spirit Square will be the Fire Pit where you can get cozy and stay warm while outside in the cold. Easy Street featuring Annie Handley & Dave Davendish and Pacifica Ukes, A Unique Ukele Ensemble will be performing live music on Spirit Square’s stage. Other entertainers to keep an eye out include Shoo Shoo the Clown and Illuminated Angels, a mother-daughter duo who stand on stilts while dressed like angels and wrapped in lights. The Town Crier, Captain Thunderpants, will be handing out event schedules to attendees as well as making sure there’s room for Santa’s arrival! Illuminated elves will also be making sure everyone is entertained this evening.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive at 6pm in the Spirit Square arriving by truck! The first 300 children at the square stage can receive a free candy cane from Mrs. Claus. Kids can also partake in creating Christmas tree crafts at the Art Gallery until 7pm. The Christmas tree in the Spirit Square will be lit up at 6:15pm; this will be a magical sight to behold! Afterwards, feel free to check out each of the lit trucks from the parade! They’ll be around in the Tyee Plaza until 7pm.
Stick around to get a photo of you with Santa and Mrs. Claus! Photos will be by donation to the Campbell River Food Bank. You can also support the Food Bank by dropping off non-perishable goods at their truck in the plaza (please check expiry dates first before donating).
For the rest of the evening, the following can be enjoyed:
- Stop by the McDonald’s Restaurant Drink Truck by Spirit Square for free coffee, tea, and cappuccinos
- The Salvation Army in front of Shoppers Drug Mart will be handing out free hot chocolate & hand-made sugar cookies, with carolers and coat donation
- Face Painter Amy Louise will be around at #1035
- Find tattoos & hair extensions by Party Mama at #1035
- Bounce-a-Rama cotton candy in the Spirit Square
- CBMD’s mini donuts will be sold in front of the vacant $ store at #1035
