Are you a fan of William Shakespeare? Are you in the mood for a comedy rather than one of his tragedies? Come to the Phoenix Theatre at the University of Victoria then, for The Comedy of Errors. This is one of Shakespeare’s earliest, shortest, and funniest comedies which features not just one, but two pairs of twins!
In this staging about the chaos of mistaken identity, the twins are separated in a storm at sea and then find themselves in Mexico, swept up into a Day of the Dead parade. What follows is a riot of wordplay filled with music, mystery, mishaps, and mayhem – with a little bit of forbidden love thrown into the mix – that then culminates into a reunion and reconciliation.
As each Shakespearean adaptation of The Comedy of Errors differs from one to the next, this one uses popular music to take its audience on a farcical exploration of the power of love and the ever-eternal question: “Who am I?”
