Beginners’ Kayaking Tips for Travel to Vancouver Island

Featured Posts Outdoor Adventures

If you are planning to travel to Vancouver Island this spring or summer, chances are kayaking is high on your list of things to do. Whether it is a lifelong goal of yours or just something you want to try your hand at while visiting our beautiful island, kayaking in the waterways is a unique experience you won’t soon forget.

There are numerous different companies throughout the Island that offer guided kayaking experiences or rentals that allow you to go out on your own. From sea kayaking with killer whales to navigating some of the most breathtaking and peaceful sounds of BC or meandering through the mangroves, your kayaking options are endless here.

For those who have never kayaked before or are still learning their way, here are a few helpful tips to ensure your Vancouver Island kayaking experience is an excellent one.

Take a Lesson

While the notion of paddling around the calm ocean waters seems easy enough for many, this isn’t always the case. Booking a lesson with a professional is generally recommended when first starting out, as they will give you great pointers that will lay the foundation for a successful future adventure next time you travel to Vancouver Island and pick up a paddle.

Practice Makes Perfect

After taking a lesson, it is wise to keep at it as often as you can. Whether this means taking a rental out in a sheltered bay or in a pool, you never practice too much. Your instructor will likely leave you with some homework and things to keep in mind before setting out on your way, so be a good student and keep at it!

Never Kayak Alone

The ocean can be extremely unpredictable, which is why it is important that you never kayak Vancouver Island on your own. Whether you decide to take a friend or family member or join up with a tour company, you will have a far more enjoyable and safe kayaking adventure with someone else by your side.

Do Your Research

Once you’ve taken a lesson, practiced what you’ve learned, and found a few kayaking buddies, it is time to do your research. There are tons of different places to kayak on Vancouver Island – both ocean and freshwater. Johnstone Strait, Broughton Archipelago, the Broken Group Island, Clayoquot Sound, the Gulf Island, Nanaimo, and the Discovery Islands are all popular ocean kayaking areas, all of which offer a different experience.

When travelling to Vancouver Island for a kayaking adventure, make sure you plan ahead before wetting your paddles and setting out. For beginners, taking a lesson and learning the basics will make a world of difference and will help contribute to your memorable trip.
