Nanaimo Events-Blackstones & Bathtubs

A new musical brought to you by the creators of the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular!

Tickets are now on sale for Razzle Dazzle Production’s new musical in celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary. Blackstones & Bathtubs is set to premiere at the Port Theatre July 2nd – 9th. The show follows four tourists who’ve missed their cruise ship departure and are transported by a storm into a dream. Aboard ‘The Dream of Nanaimo’ our motley crew are moved through moments inspired by Nanaimo’s history and culture. This show is sure to have you wanting more “Nanaimo’ and singing along to boot!

Katy Bowen-Roberts and James Mark (creators of the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular) and Jessica Lowry, began the creative process for this new musical theatre work back in May 2016.  “We’ve had a really inspiring time exploring Nanaimo’s past as this artistic process has unfolded.  I am excited to share elements of Nanaimo’s history through song, story, dance and costume on the Port Theatre stage” says Producer, Katy.

Jessica, Writer and Director, became intrigued by Nanaimo’s relationship to coal and this idea of an explosive history: mine explosions, fires, challenging, passionate, powerful people. This led to a broader exploration of the fire element and then to an exploration of fire origin stories within the Snuneymuxw culture and other Coast Salish oral traditions.

The team is working with Snuneymuxw elder Gary Manson who will be helping to create an offstage and onstage presence. A group of Snuneymuxw youth/children will be sharing elements of our story in Hul-qumi-num.

A solid roster of Island talent will be featured. Our five-piece band (directed by James Mark, also on Violin) includes local talented professional musicians; Melissa Hill (keys), David Baird (Double Bass), Jesse Marshall (Guitar) and Graham Villette (Drums).  Four lead actor/singers have been cast including Alexander Nicoll of the Comox Valley and Kirsten Van Ritzen of Victoria. Vancouver performers Amy King and Sean Patrick Sonier are also starring. Joining the production team are Comox based lighting designer Robinson Wilson, local sound designer Paul Tedeschini, and Nanaimo’s Raymond Knight of Knight Productions who will be working with historic images and video.

An ensemble of seven pre-professional Nanaimo student dancers have been cast and will have the opportunity to work on a full scale production with local Nanaimo choreographer, Nicola Jackson. Nanaimo will have the chance to enjoy their tremendous energy, talent and commitment.

“My favorite part of the musical process is when the charts are performed by live musicians. That first day when we rehearse, you’ve tried something new and it really works. Very exciting,” says music director and composer, James Mark. James has written a theme as the musical thread to help guide the actors through the ‘dream of Nanaimo’.  He has also written new arrangements of songs about Nanaimo by Vancouver Island singer songwriters Bob Bossin and Brian Hazelbower.  Other Canadian music includes Rita McNeil’s ‘Working Man’, Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ and Diana Krall’s ‘Departure Bay’ and moving outside of Canada, musical hits include “The House of the Rising Sun”, “Wipe Out” and “Sing Sing Sing.

Audiences are sure to enjoy many twists and turns on this mercurial, theatrical, musical journey into Nanaimo’s ancient roots, explosive history and quirky culture.
