Nanaimo’s summer tradition is back again this year! Symphony by the Sea happens on Saturday, August 12th at Maffeo Sutton Park at 6pm. This FREE, community event is proudly brought to you by the Vancouver Island Symphony. Wear your red and white and we can continue the Canada 150 celebrations.
Each year 5,000+ people head to Maffeo Sutton Park with picnic blankets, lawn chairs – sometimes umbrellas – it is a rain or shine event – to enjoy the glorious music of the Vancouver Island Symphony. This is the VI Symphony’s gift to the people of Nanaimo and area – the gift of live music!
Calvin Dyck, Vancouver Island Symphony Concertmaster and producer of Symphony by the Sea, is returning with the baton, and his violin, for this popular event. Calvin promises that there is music for everyone in this show. There will be Star Wars themes, music from “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, featuring the trumpeters of the Vancouver Island Symphony. The concert will also feature the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra performing the famous “Tango Jealousy” by Jacob Gade complete with choreography and red tango dresses. As well, Calvin will bring a bit of circus fun to Maffeo Sutton Park – there will be a medley of tunes from Cirque de Soleil with a surprise Circus act on a 24 – foot Tripod!
The concert will highlight the virtuosic “Carmen Fantasy” by Sarasate played by violinist Jeremy Potts from Courtenay, and the famous “Double Violin Concerto” by Bach played by Calvin and Jeremy. Also of note is the moving “Finlandia” by Sibelius and the delightful “Thunder and Lighting” Polka by Strauss.
Donations will be collected to help pay for this premiere musical event.
