Lake Cowichan Events-Mushroom Salmon Festival 2017

Mushrooms and salmon go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly. The good news is there’s a festival for just those two foods! Lake Cowichan’s Mushroom Salmon Festival is a time-honoured tradition in Lake Cowichan, with seventeen years worth of community effort, support, and eagerness to learn more about these two foods found in the Cowichan Valley. The event has grown to the point where over 700 adults and children attended last year’s festival!

This year, you can expect to enjoy these two foods served in varying recipes by the Fungi Cafe for only five dollars! You can also enjoy browsing and greeting with the various vendors who will be selling preserves, fresh produce, jewelry, homemade goodies, and even mushroom growing kits. Local artists have also joined in the fun and many of the Cowichan Valley’s artisans, painters, and ceramists will be offering their vision of the beautiful nature the Valley has to offer. Kids can get involved too at the Children’s Table where they can put together their own art using salmon and mushroom forms.

Mushroom expert Ingeborg Woodsworth will be once again providing information with her mushroom display and the opportunity for guests to have her identify any fungi brought in by them.

The big draw for this event is the Saturday field trip, where up to 100 people gather to explore the local woods for fungi identification and gathering. New this year is the paint night, where you can get artsy for about 2 hours. The event organizers will host the canvas, paints, and brushes, and you can take your creation home! Space is limited to 20 people however, so if you want a seat book early! Preregistration is encouraged.

More details about the many activities at this year’s festival can be found at the official website.
