Nanaimo Winter Events-Vancouver Island Symphony Presents: Reindeer Games

On December 2 at 7:30, the Vancouver Island Symphony is excited to be presenting Reindeer Games with the wild and whacky Festive Brass quartet at the Port Theatre.  After such a popular sold-out performance in previous years, we wanted to share this fun-for-the-whole-family show once again.

Merriness, magic, and a dash of madness are on this musical menu. The Festive Brass delivers Christmas music in a different way presenting a cheeky sense of humour while still honouring traditional carols. With over two hundred original arrangements, you’ll hear ‘mash ups’ that combine Christmas carols with TV show themes, video game music, and pop music classics. It’s fabulous fun!

A crowd-pleasing favourite at Butchart Gardens during the Christmas season, Festive Brass has been showcasing their talents since 1998. Vancouver Island Symphony’s principal trumpet Stevan Paranosic leads the group, which features accomplished Victoria musicians Robert Fraser, Bruce Hurn, and Nick La Riviere. They have performed with the Vancouver Island Symphony twice before and are so popular we have asked them back. You will hear wonderful holiday pieces like:  God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Carol of the Drum,  A la Media Noché,   Silent Night, Deck the Hall, We Wish You a Merry Christmas and more festive favourites!

Festive Brass will perk up your senses, and not just because of the horns. Their arrangements are fresh, novel and sometimes unconventional. How about The Little Drummer Boy with a groovy, percussive Latin beat? Or a Klezmerized, Jewish carol they like to call Oy! to the World? Weird and wonderful, right?

Ever hear of a little TV show called Game of Thrones? The night’s opening number is a cinematic affair that introduces not only their musical talent, but also the quartet’s comedic flair as they overlay the Thrones theme song with some Christmas music to present, A Game of Carols. You won’t believe it.

The Vancouver Island Symphony will join the fun with a charming European Carol Suite that includes clever re-workings of traditional songs, including Pat-a-PanBring a Torch Jeanette Isabella, and Masters in this Hall. The orchestra’s incredible musicianship will also be highlighted in arrangements of enduring classics like the beautiful Coventry Carol, Mel Torme’s The Christmas Song, and the ever-popular Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride.

And it wouldn’t be Reindeer Games without Rudolph. One of the Festive Brass’s most popular requests is for their whacky mixes of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. With over ten different arrangements, you might hear their calypso or waltz versions, maybe some Dixieland or Rudolph Goes to Greece (think Zorba the Greek). The Festive Brass crew promises a special Rudolph surprise this year that will be out of this universe.

“This is the third time we’ve invited Festive Brass for the Christmas concert, for a good reason,” explains Pierre Simard, the Symphony’s Artistic Director. “Their brand of music-making combined with humour and custom-made arrangements, is unique!”

“I have conducted LOTS of Christmas concerts in my career, with many orchestras, and quite honestly, the ones with Festive Brass clearly are amongst the most enjoyable and fun I have been part of.” Pierre continues, “They bring a very special blend of imagination, surprises, instrumental virtuosity and of course – festiveness to their productions. This  will be a wonderful way to begin the Christmas season!”

This is Christmas, Vancouver Island Symphony Style! The entire program appeals to all generations, and with costume changes, lighting and other stage effects, the show fabulously festive. Add in a rousing, carol sing-a-long for the entire audience and this is a performance you won’t want to miss.
