For many years, women have fought for their rights, rights that provide them with a position equal to those of men, in terms of legal and social aspects. Since 1975, International Women’s Day has been celebrated all over the world. In Nanaimo, it is also celebrated widely in the community. A Celebration of the Women in Our Community is an afternoon tea with Tracy Samra (Interim City Manager) as the keynote speaker. Everyone’s invited, and is encouraged to wear traditional clothing as representation of one’s ancestry. There’s still a lot to learn about women’s rights, that even if many are no longer victims, there are still those who are continuously struggling in this society.
